PAROS island guide
by ZOE XEMANTILOTOU

ZOE XEMANTILOTOU of NESO STUDIO is a jewellery designer with a background in archaeology and art history living on PAROS — an island becoming one of the more popular in the Cyclades. We spoke to her about all things PAROS and why the island means so much to her.
Can you tell us a bit about what you do, and who you are?
My work is deeply inspired by Greek history, universe and planets, mythology, and the natural beauty of the CYCLADES. Before settling in PAROS, I spent time traveling and studying different artistic traditions, but I always felt drawn back to Greece, where history and craftsmanship are intertwined in everyday life.

"There’s something about the energy of PAROS that is both calming and creatively invigorating."
How long have you been living in PAROS?
I’ve been living in PAROS for several years now. Initially, I visited the island for short stays, but I quickly realised that this was the place I wanted to call home. There’s something about the energy of PAROS that is both calming and creatively invigorating.

Greek islands have a lot of similarities, but they are usually defined by some unique qualities. What is it about PAROS that sets it apart from other islands?
PAROS has a perfect balance—it’s lively without being overwhelming, traditional yet open to innovation. Unlike some other islands that cater mostly to high-end tourism or backpackers, PAROS attracts a diverse crowd, from artists and surfers to food lovers and history buffs. The island also has a strong local community, and despite its popularity, it still feels authentic.
As well as being a jewellery designer, you have a background in archaeology and art history. Are there certain parts of Greece that really speak to those interests?
Absolutely! I find inspiration all over Greece, but the Cyclades hold a special place in my heart. The ancient ruins of DELOS, the prehistoric settlement of AKROTIRI in SANTORINI, and the Byzantine churches of PAROS all captivate me. The simplicity and geometry of Cycladic art also influence my jewellery designs.

The CYCLADES are thousands of years old, serving as the backdrop for many ancient myths and legends. Do you have a favourite story from the area?
Apollo’s myths are deeply connected to themes of beauty, knowledge, fate, and tragedy. He embodies both the divine and the destructive power of the gods. His connection to the sun, music, prophecy, and healing gave him a wide array of roles in myth, making him one of the most complex and enduring gods in Greek mythology.
In my experience with Greek islands, PAROS seems to be one with a lot of incredible food options. What are your favourite places to eat on the island and why?
PAROS is a food lover’s paradise! For traditional dishes, I love Gialos Restaurant in PISO LIVADI for its amazing seafood, fresh local ingredients, and warm hospitality. Blue Oyster in ABELAS, very tasty food and bio wines, Siparos in SANTA MARIA offers a modern take on Greek cuisine. For a casual yet delicious meal, Moira Restaurant in PARIKIA serves home-style Greek dishes. And if you love pastries, you can’t miss Stratis Bakery for their traditional Parian sweets.
For a first-time visitor, where would you suggest is the best area to stay?
It depends on what kind of experience they want. NAOUSSA is great for those who want nightlife and a vibrant atmosphere. PARIKIA is perfect for history lovers and those who enjoy a mix of locals and visitors. If someone wants a more relaxed stay, LEFKES offers a charming mountain village escape, while PISO LIVADI is ideal for a quiet, seaside retreat.

The island—and more specifically NAOUSSA—is one of the most prominent wine regions of Greece. Why is this, and do you have a favourite winery to visit?
PAROS has a unique terroir due to its limestone-rich soil and sunny climate, which makes it ideal for winemaking. The Moraitis Winery in Naoussa is my favourite—it’s family-run, and their wines are both delicious and deeply connected to the island’s history. Their Assyrtiko and Malagouzia blends are particularly special.

PAROS seems to have a lot of beach bars. What are your favourite beaches to swim at that are a bit more on the relaxed side, with good food nearby?
For a laid-back experience, GOLDEN beach is wonderful—calm waters, soft sand, and a great beach bars with delicious food. KALOYEROS beach is another favourite, with its red clay cliffs and natural beauty. MOLOS beach is a quieter, untouched option where you can enjoy the sea without the crowds.
We hope that tourists in 2025 are becoming more aware of over-tourism. We have visited a few islands that are running out of water due to the long, dry summers and lack of rain. Are there any sustainable practices visitors to PAROS can participate in during their stay, or is there anything you would ask they be mindful of?
Yes! Water conservation is key—shorter showers and reusing towels can help. Supporting local businesses, eating seasonal produce, and avoiding single-use plastics are great ways to minimize environmental impact. Visitors should also be mindful of respecting local customs and keeping beaches clean.
What do you hope for PAROS in the next 10 years?
I hope PAROS continues to thrive while maintaining its authenticity. It would be great to see more sustainable tourism initiatives, like eco-friendly accommodations and better waste management. I also hope the island preserves its traditional character and doesn’t become over-developed like some other destinations. The balance between growth and preservation is key.
